What is PiYo??

“So, what exactly is PiYo?” I get this question pretty often… and I’m happy to tell you about it for two reasons!

  1. Many people don’t know what PiYo is
  2. I absolutely love it and want to spread the love!

So… What is PiYo?

PiYo is a fusion of the best sports training, flexibility training and strength with a Pilates and yoga influence. It’s a low impact, high intensity workout, which means it will define your body but will not put stress on your joints. PiYo has become my soul mate work out and one of the best ways to get a total body workout! You’ll sweat, stretch, and strengthen—all in one workout! This class will really get your heart rate going as it features various styles of yoga and Pilates in continuous movement and flow from one exercise to another. PiYo is from celebrity trainer Chalene Johnson and brought to you from the creators of P90x & Insanity and is the next big thing in fitness! It was designed for people who want the mind-body benefits of a yoga or Pilates workout, but with a more fast-paced, higher-energy, and higher-sweat class.

How is it unique from other yoga/pilates classes?

PiYo is different than other yoga and Pilates blends in many ways. While it does blend together these two mind-body exercises, it also adds in components of martial arts and dance for a more intense, kick-booty workout. PiYo also uses upbeat, fun music, rather than traditional zen yoga music, to keep it exciting, and keep you focused and in the zone during the workout. The poses and moves help add flexibility to the muscles, increase the range of motion in your joints, improve your balance, improve energy and reduce stress, for a total mind-body, blissed-out workout.

Strength

The PiYo system is a total-body strengthening workout. Poses such as plank, side plank, core work, lunges and squats are key elements to engage the large and small muscles of the body. By working in and out of these poses, you build strength using your own body’s resistance. In this style of classes, your muscles are worked to be toned and sculpted, but not bulky as in some classes.

Cardio

Unlike most yoga and Pilates classes, PiYo classes are aerobic. PiYo classes link together dynamic, constantly flowing exercises to increase your heart rate, burn calories and make you drenched in sweat! PiYo is low-impact but high energy, with moves and poses taken from traditional yoga, Pilates and dance, linked together in a way to add more cardio and fun. These moves include flowing in and out of Warrior pose, stepping in and out of lunges, and flowing through traditional Sun Salutations.

Who would benefit from this class?

YOU! Anyone can benefit from this class!  One of the funniest remarks I have heard from people getting started in any workout program is “I am not in good enough shape or fit enough to do that work out.” This statement implies you have to reach a certain point in fitness before being able to work out! In reality, we have to push ourselves to work out in order to reach the fitness level we want to be! For example, we go to the orthodontist so that we will get help in getting straighter teeth so we can have the smile we want… its not the other way around! Saying you have to be in shape to work out is like saying that it is required to have straight teeth before going to the orthodontist!

PiYo is for all fitness levels. In my class we have men & women, in a variety of ages at several different fitness levels! Whether you are advanced or just starting out on your fitness journey, this workout is for you. It is not a pansy workout but each time you come to class the better you get! There are also modifications to all the moves if you need time to work up to the regular moves!

What are the benefits of PiYo?

PiYo combines the muscle-sculpting, core-firming benefits of Pilates with the strength and flexibility of flowing yoga movements.
